It was founded by Hervé Bizeul in 1997 and specializes in the classic wines of this region, namely Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages and Côtes Catalanes.Bizeul, then a sommelier and wine journalist, established the estate with just a few plots of vines and a converted garage for a winery. The first vintage was produced using extremely basic winemaking equipment, including four small tiny resin tanks and cheese-cloths.Over the years Le Clos des Fées has evolved to comprise seven vineyard sites in Vingrau, Tautavel, Maury, Calce, Lesquerde, Opoul and Espira de l'Agly. These vineyards are planted on a diverse range of soil types that vary from limestone to clay to granite, some with pebbles reminiscent of those found in Châteaneuf-du-Pape.
