Le Macchiole is an iconic, highly revered wine estate located in Bolgheri, along Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, globally celebrated as a pioneering force behind the region's modern fine wine renaissance. Founded in 1983 by the late Eugenio Campolmi and his wife Cinzia Merli, the estate began as a modest 4-hectare passion project before expanding into a highly sophisticated 24-hectare property. Following Campolmi’s untimely passing in 2002, Cinzia Merli courageously took absolute command of the estate, masterfully steering it alongside her sons Elia and Mattia. In a region world-famous for complex multi-grape Bordeaux blends (like Sassicaia and Ornellaia), Le Macchiole radically distinguished itself by pursuing an uncompromising, site-specific single-varietal philosophy. Their vineyards are farmed entirely via certified organic agriculture since 2002—complemented by active biodynamic trials—across a mosaic of medium-textured limestone, loamy clay, and deep sand soils that host some of the oldest vines in Bolgheri. Under the technical guidance of winemaker Luca Rettondini, the estate implements a meticulously precise, gravity-fed vinification flow utilizing spontaneous wild-yeast fermentations and gentle maturation in a combination of concrete vats, large oak tonneaux, and traditional French barriques. Their extraordinary portfolio is headlined by three legendary, 100% monovarietal Toscana IGT cuvées that serve as the definitive benchmarks for their respective grapes: the flagship Paleo Rosso (a transformative, pure Cabernet Franc launched as a single variety in 2001), the critically flawless Messorio (a structural, 100-point pure Merlot), and the rare, aromatic Scrio (an intensely expressive 100% Syrah), all beautifully supported by their accessible, vibrant Bolgheri Rosso estate blend.
