      Detailed Description

This white-hay-colored wine offers a superb even if still rather reduced nose of mirabelle, cardamom, earthy spices, bergamot, pear, and smoke. It is nicely juicy on the palate, where it develops a pungent sense of spices and herbs. The finish is engaging, long, and promising, especially as the fruity side comes through.

      Producer Information

Weingut Carl Loewen is a highly acclaimed, historic family-owned wine estate based in Leiwen within Germany's Mosel Valley, whose winemaking lineage dates back to 1803 when ancestors purchased original church vineyard parcels during Napoleonic secularization. Today, eighth-generation winemaker Christopher Loewen works alongside his father, Karl-Josef, managing roughly 18 hectares of steep, south-facing river slopes across premium villages like Leiwen, Longuich, and Thörnich. The estate is universally renowned for its extraordinary viticultural heritage, featuring a collection of exceptionally old vines where over 50% are ungrafted, pre-phylloxera rootstocks—including their crown jewel parcel in the Maximin Herrenberg vineyard, which was planted in 1896 and stands as one of the oldest producing Riesling vineyards in the world. In the cellar, the Loewens operate entirely on a low-intervention, gravity-fed philosophy that skips mechanical pumping, temperature controls, and chemical adjustments. Instead, they champion spontaneous fermentation via indigenous wild yeasts and age their top single-vineyard cuvées in traditional, large Moselian fuder oak barrels. This obsessive commitment to minimalist craftsmanship yields exceptionally precise, crystalline, and terroir-driven Rieslings (comprising 90–95% of production) that effortlessly balance salty minerality with bright acidity across both bone-dry Grosses Gewächs bottlings and light, playful, sweet Prädikat styles like Kabinett and Spätlese.
