Producer Information
Matthieu Barret is a celebrated, seventh-generation vigneron who has redefined Northern Rhône winemaking since taking over his family's estate, Domaine du Coulet, in Cornas in 1998 at just 23 years old. Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and educated in viticulture in Beaune, Barret stepped in to manage the vineyards originally planted by his grandfather after WWII. Rejecting industrial machinery, he completely eliminated tractors in 2012, choosing instead to till the estate’s steep, decomposed granite terraces using mules, horses, and manual labor. “The vines are planted on steep south/south-east-facing terraces which are carved into the granite rock of Cornas,” pushing the 40- to 55-year-old Syrah roots deep into the earth to deliver highly concentrated, low-yield fruit. Driven by a strict biodynamic philosophy certified since 2002, Barret treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem, creating dedicated green spaces and watering holes to foster wild biodiversity. His commitment to minimal intervention transfers directly to the cellar, where he acts as a "guide" rather than a manipulator; he completely abandoned oak barrels in 2016 in favor of concrete eggs, ceramic vats, and glass globes to preserve fruit purity without adding wood flavors. By avoiding fining, filtration, and standard sulfur additions, he crafts intensely vibrant, terroir-driven Syrah and Roussanne—ranging from his profound flagship Cornas cuvées like Brise Cailloux to his highly accessible, juicy Petit Ours (Little Bear) negociant line.
