Lost Distillery Company fue fundada por los ex empleados de Diageo Scott Watson y Brian Woods en 2013 como una marca subsidiaria de Crucial Drinks (el nombre comercial de LDC Scotland Ltd). La pareja estableció una relación de trabajo con el profesor Michael Moss de la Universidad de Glasgow, quien dirigió un equipo de archiveros para hacer una conjetura sobre el carácter del whisky de un puñado de destilerías perdidas.
