El tequila Tepoz lleva el nombre de Tepoztecatl, el dios azteca del "pulque y la fertilidad". El pulque es el antiguo precursor del tequila, elaborado al permitir que el néctar de agave fermente al sol. El tequila moderno se cosecha a partir de agave maduro (al menos 10 años) cocido en hornos de barro tradicionales durante 28 horas. La madurez más larga permite un mayor "contenido brix" o dulzura en el agave.
