Detailed Description

A collaboration American single malt finished in casks that previously held North Coast Brewing’s “Old Rasputin” Russian Imperial Stout. Built on Virginia Distillery’s malted barley base, it spends its final maturation in stout-seasoned barrels to add dark roasted depth, cocoa richness, and subtle coffee bitterness. It sits in the Brewer’s Coalition series, where beer-barrel finishing is used to layer complexity onto a clean, malt-driven whiskey structure.

Virginia Distillery Co. x North Coast Brewing The Brewer's Coalition Old Rasputin Stout Cask Single Malt Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Cocoa powder, roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, and light coffee with subtle dark fruit and oak.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied — milk chocolate, espresso, caramel, toasted barley, and dark cherry with gentle stout-like bitterness.

Finish: Long and slightly drying with lingering cocoa, roasted coffee, malt sweetness, and soft oak spice.

Distillery Information

Virginia Distillery Co. produces 100% malted barley American single malt whiskey using copper pot stills and aging primarily in ex-bourbon casks before finishing. The Brewer’s Coalition series focuses on collaborations with craft breweries, using spent stout barrels to add layers of roasted malt character and beer-derived complexity. The Old Rasputin edition is one of the more robust expressions in the series, as Russian Imperial Stout barrels contribute deep roasted notes and mild bitterness that complement the whiskey’s natural malt sweetness. The result is a hybrid profile that bridges craft beer intensity with single malt structure, emphasizing chocolate, coffee, and toasted grain over heavy smoke or peat.
