It is named for a government listening post that is located just up the road from the estate. The vineyards are on mostly alluvial soils, with stone and shingle running through them. Older parts of the vineyards have higher proportions of clay, river gravel and stone. The Johnson Estate was the first vineyard to be established at Spy Valley and was purchased in 1993 – today there are almost 161 hectares (400 acres) under vine. Since then, Spy Valley has added the 10-hectare (25-acre) Outpost Vineyard, and the 23-hectare (57-acre) Area H171 vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley.
