      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: This vintage of Spy Valley's top wine is very reductive at the moment, with intense oniony aromas overpowering all the rest. It struggles to blow off with exposure to air but eventually does eke out soft citrus, flint and toasty oak (a “Fumé Blanc” style, it spends 12 months in oak). The palate sears with laser-sharp acidity that slices through a creamy, opulent mouthfeel and juicy citrus fruit. The oak can be felt right through to the finish.
      • James Suckling: This ages nicely with aromas and flavors of dried mango and fresh papaya that follows through to a medium body, fresh acidity and a focused finish.

      Producer Information

Spy Valley is a winery located in the lower Waihopai Valley in the Marlborough winegrowing region of New Zealand's south island. Currently there are three estate vineyards scattered throughout the wider Marlborough region and planted to a whole host of grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah. It is named for a government listening post that is located just up the road from the estate. The vineyards are on mostly alluvial soils, with stone and shingle running through them. Older parts of the vineyards have higher proportions of clay, river gravel and stone. The Johnson Estate was the first vineyard to be established at Spy Valley and was purchased in 1993 – today there are almost 161 hectares (400 acres) under vine. Since then, Spy Valley has added the 10-hectare (25-acre) Outpost Vineyard, and the 23-hectare (57-acre) Area H171 vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. There are three ranges of wines at Spy Valley: the entry-level Satellite range; the flagship Spy Valley label; and the single-vineyard Envoy range. Several other bottlings have been produced over the years, including a Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine called Echelon.
