Red Wine: 2003 | Caymus Vineyards | Bionic Frog Syrah

Good dark red. Distinctly balsamic, rather "southern" nose offers scents of cooked plum, mocha, celery seed and Worcestershire sauce; a bit like a mature Châteauneuf du Pape. Large-scaled, very ripe and sweet but a bit undifferentiated, with a trace of remaining red berry fruit joined by notes of powdered mustard seed, truffle and milk chocolate.

      Detailed Description

Good dark red. Distinctly balsamic, rather "southern" nose offers scents of cooked plum, mocha, celery seed and Worcestershire sauce; a bit like a mature Châteauneuf du Pape. Large-scaled, very ripe and sweet but a bit undifferentiated, with a trace of remaining red berry fruit joined by notes of powdered mustard seed, truffle and milk chocolate. This rather warm wine shows some incipient maderization notes but although it appears to be in decline it still shows decent energy in the mouth. Finishes with drying tannins.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: More ripe, voluptuous and decadent, if not with hints of overripeness, the 2003 Syrah Bionic Frog offers tons of plum, licorice, spice-cake and chocolatey notes to go with a rocking, full-bodied, sexy and concentrated feel on the palate. This beast of a wine won’t be for everyone, but it dishes out incredible amounts of pleasure. I like it now, and don’t think it’s going to get any better, but it will easily evolve nicely for another decade.
        • Wine Spectator: Has amazing density, a wine of immense depth, wrapping silky tannins around plum, mineral, blackberry, prune and meat flavors, hinting at dark chocolate and walnut as the finish rolls on and on.

        Producer Information

In 1972, Chuck Wagner started Caymus Vineyards with his parents, Charlie and Lorna, with a humble plan and an uncharted future. The Wagner family were farmers with deep roots in the Napa Valley – in 1857, Chuck Wagner’s great-great grandfather captained a wagon train to California from Bible Grove, Missouri. Working together for decades, Chuck Wagner and his parents established the family’s work ethic, appetite for innovation, down-to-earth sensibility, and deep appreciation of the pleasures of good food and wine enjoyed with family and friends.Today, Caymus Cabernet is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated wines. Made from grapes farmed in 8 of Napa Valley’s 16 appellations, the wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins – as approachable in youth as it is in maturity. Chuck Wagner continues to make two world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignons – Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection. Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine in the world to be honored twice as Wine Spectator magazine’s “Wine of the Year” for the 1984 and 1990 vintages.
