Garnet in color, with bright red reflections. Aromas of forest floor, blackberries and raspberries. As it opens in the glass, it gains new energy with fresh aromas of red fruits, violets and rockrose. In a third phase, aromas of spice and a smoked side coming from the very well­integrated oak aging, which freely lets the personality of the vineyards of Quinta de Ervamoira pass through. A long and vibrant finish with very silky tannins.

• Wine Advocate: The 2019 Tinto Quinta de Ervamoira is a field blend aged for 18 months in one-third new French oak (about one-third overall in large vats). It comes in at 15.6% alcohol. A harder wine than the Duas Quintas Reserva, this doesn't seem to handle its power quite as well, but it doesn't go fully off the rails either. On the good news side of the ledger, it projects lots of flavor and has precision on the long finish. If I wasn't quite sure the Duas Quintas Reserva was going to work in the long haul, I am probably even less sure here. Yet at the same time, it often seems spectacular and delicious. I predict this will work out, but give it a couple of years in the cellar. It certainly needs to answer some questions in the cellar. I would rather be especially cautious just now.

Ramos Pinto is a Port House founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880. The house's aged Tawnies were historically the stars of the portfolio (and arguably still are), the rest of the lineup has caught up over the last few decades. The estate is made up of four different quintas. The flagship wine comes from the Quinta do Bom Retiro vineyard in the Pinhão parish of Cima Corgo. Pinto purchased this 62 hectare (153 acre) quinta in 1919, and 40-percent of the vineyard is still planted in the traditional way, with grape varieties mixed throughout the vineyards. The Urtiga vineyard, covering just 4ha (10 acres) is located next door. The other major estate is Ervamoira, at Touça in the Douro Superior. Pinto bought this vineyard in 1974 and broke new ground by planting in vertical rows up the slopes, and planting by variety based on the vineyard's soil types, rather than in the traditional mix. Nearby is Quinta dos Bon Areas, which was added to the portfolio in 1985. The vines here provide fresher, less-concentrated grapes than the other sites, which are typically used in blending. The Ramos Pinto portfolio covers most of the typical Port styles, including white, tawny and ruby variants as well as several aged tawnies and LBVs. The house also makes some top vintage Ports, and red and white Douro table wines. The company became part of the Roederer group in 1990.
