      Detailed Description

This wine is full-bodied, opulent, and nuanced, boasting notes of ripe dark fruits, spices, and hints of leather and tobacco.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Spectator: This is lightly firm, with the vintage's plum skin and raisin notes at the edges, but the core of black currant, licorice and anise is juicy and very solid, with spice and iron notes playing out on the finish.
      • Jeb Dunnuck: The best of the ‘08s (but not by much), the 2008 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou, a blend of 70% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Vaccarèse, is deeper and richer than the two Côtes du Rhônes, exhibiting earthy, meaty aromas intermixed with flowers, spice, licorice, and very pretty fruit. Elegant and classy on the palate, it’s medium bodied with fresh acidity, a focused, straight texture and a long finish. Certainly an outstanding wine, this delivers more on purity and edge than power and concentration.

The estate was first founded in 1895 as a hunting reserve and was left forested until 1955 when the Pouizin family realized the land's vineyard potential. The first bottles of Le Clos du Caillou were not traded in France until the 1970s, and in 1980 the first bottles of wine were exported. Now the wines of Le Clos du Caillou are exported around the world. The Le Clos du Caillou vineyard includes nine hectares (22 acres) in Châteauneuf-du-Pape itself and another 45 hectares (111 acres) that fall under the Côtes du Rhône appellation. The soil is composed mainly of rolled quartz pebbles (galets) and some sandy soils over marl.
