Detailed Description
Detailed Description
Lovely cherry, raspberry, plum, and boysenberry tones dominate the aromas of this very fruit-forward Cabernet, which shows more subtle notes of vanilla and caramel as the wine evolves in the glass. On the palate, the flavors of cocoa, berry jam, warm pecans and vanilla creme seem initially most forward, but complexing flavors of amaretto and caramel/betterscotch underscore the ripe fruit notes.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon M. Etain is dark, rich, sumptuous and highly expressive. A totally voluptuous wine, the 2009 flows across the palate with layers of dark fruit. Stylistically, the M. Etain is very close to the Scarecrow Cabernet in this vintage, although it has less aromatic complexity and depth. Hints of smoke, tobacco, incense and licorice are layered into the juicy, mid-weight finish.
- Wine Spectator: Amazingly complex, firm, dense and concentrated, with a vivid, lively, structured mix of dried currant, mineral, cedar, sage and tobacco notes. Fills out nicely on the finish and holds its focus, ending with a satisfyingly chewy, rich bundle of dark berry fruit.
Producer Information
Scarecrow Estate is a wine producer located in the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, California. The flagship estate wine, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, regularly receives glowing critic reviews, achieving a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 2007 vintage. In the early 1900s, Joseph Judson Cohn, chief of production at MGM, moved to Rutherford and purchased a 180-acre (72-hectare) property. In 1939 John Daniel Jr. took over the property that bordered Cohn's, home to the iconic Inglenook vineyard founded by Daniel's great uncle Gustave Niebaum. Daniel convinced JJ Cohn to plant 80 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon (32ha) on his land. This came with the promise that the former would purchase the grapes for the production of his Inglenook wines. On Cohn's death in 1996, the buildings of the estate came under the control of his grandson, Bret Lopez. He also took on 25 acres (10ha) of partially planted vineyard land, and 2 acres (0.8ha) of original 1945 Cabernet Sauvignon. Lopez decided to make wine under his own label, while continuing to sell grapes to other producers in the region. The wine was named for his grandfather's time at MGM, where he had worked on the film The Wizard of Oz. Lopez decided on Scarecrow as a symbol of life, American optimism and ultimately, agriculture. The first vintage was 2003. Scarecrow produce only two wines, one named for the estate and the other called M.Ètain. Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes from the estate in Rutherford, from both hillside blocks and plots located on the plateau. It is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in 90 percent new French oak for 12 months. It is then returned to the tank for blending across plots before being returned to the oak to age for an additional 10 months. It is a rare and highly collectable wine – on average, only 500 cases are produced a year. M.Ètain is produced in much the same way, but without the additional barrel age. Its first vintage was 2008 and it is also made from 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon from estate plots. It is fermented in small vats, aged in 90-percent new French oak for 16 months. The wine is then bottled and released without fining or filtering.
