This is a warm, rich wine with spicy black-fruit flavors. Touches of coffee have come through with the wood aging. Bright acidity gives a touch of freshness to the firm tannins at the end. Blend 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc & 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Reviews:

• Vinous: The 2013 Canon La Gaffelière shows lovely energy and length, although it could use a bit more mid-palate. Sweet spices, plums, graphite and smoke emerge, but only with great reluctance. Today it is the wine's length that impresses most, but time will tell if all the elements fully come together. The 2013 is a model of precision and class. The blend is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is to say a little less Franc than is typical. Yields are just 10 hectoliters per hectare.

• James Suckling: A soft and silky Canon la Gaffeliere with chocolate, berry, and light mineral undertones. Medium body, juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Located on the famous slope (and the foot of the slope) south of the medieval village of Saint-Emilion, Chateau Canon La Gaffelière has belonged to the Counts von Neipperg since 1971. Representing some eight centuries of family winegrowing tradition, Count Stephan von Neipperg has succeeded in placing Chateau Canon La Gaffelière among the top Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion thanks to a winegrowing philosophy that gives priority not only to quality, but also respect for the environment. Chateau Canon La Gaffelière is located on the outskirts of the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, at the southern foot of the slope. The 19.5 hectare (48 acres) vineyard has a complex, outstanding terroir of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil. The topsoil is primarily sandy, increasingly so as one moves away from the slope. The unusual proportion of grape varieties (55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) at Canon-La-Gaffelière is perfectly suited to the soil.
