Reviews:
- James Suckling: Aromas of camphor, coffee bean and coconut mingle with whiffs of violet. Full-bodied and enveloping, the palate features dried cherry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly knit, close-grained tannins.
- Vinous: A wine with a complex, elegant and balanced structure. Ruby in colour tending towards garnet, with intense and elegant aromas, with hints of violets, underbrush and spices, it has a character of finesse, with firm, velvety tannins and a long, deep finish.
Producer Information
Cantine Dei is an Italian winery in the Montepulciano region of Tuscany, just east of the hilltop town of Montepulciano, 60km (37 miles) southeast of Siena. Sangiovese is the predominant variety in the vineyards, and is used to make the signature Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG wines. Cantine Dei also makes a small amount of white wine from estate-grown Malvasia and Trebbiano, as well as producing a Vin Santo di Montepulciano. The estate was founded in 1964, when the Bossona vineyard in Montepulciano was planted by Alibrando Dei. Cantine Dei has since expanded its vineyard holdings, but Bossona remains the source for the flagship Riserva Vin Nobile di Montepulciano and the labels carry the vineyard's name. Dei bought a second vineyard, Martiena, in the 1970s, but until the 1980s the grapes from both vineyards were sold to other producers.
