Reviews:
- Wine Enthusiast: Initial aromas of tire rubber and road tar give way to berry and cassis scents. On the palate, this is a medium-to-full CS that's mouthfilling more than elegant. Gamy berry flavors are matched by buttery oak, while vanilla notes vie with residual cherry and plum fruit on a ripe finish.
- Patricio Tapia: Full of spice and tobacco notes, here we have enough firm tannins to think about pouring it with sausages or aged cheeses, but it also has a depth of flavors that could make it better for beef stew. The smoothness contrasts with the acidity of a textbook carménère.
Producer Information
Casillero del Diablo is a value-led brand from Chile, a part of the portfolio of Concha y Toro, the largest wine producer in Latin America. Casillero del Diablo wines are made from classic Chilean grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere, and are widely available in the global marketplace. The brand was established in 1963, but the legend of Casillero del Diablo dates to the 19th Century at the cellar of Don Melchor, Concha y Toro's founder. Wine was being stolen out of the cellar, so Don Melchor spread a rumor that the cellar was haunted by the devil himself, 'El Diablo'. Casillero del Diablo source grapes from around Chile, including from vineyards in the Maipo, Maule, Rapel, Casablanca, and Limarí Valleys. These are separated into a number of ranges – Reserva, the Devil's Collection, Reserva Privada and Riserva Especial– and are both varietal and blended. The top wines fall under the Reserva Privada and Riserva Especial labels.
