Detailed Description
This is very showy, with sparks of anise, black tea and woodspice being thrown off from a core of steeped blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry pate de fruit notes.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is Grenache from a single sandy parcel at the junction of three lieux-dits (le Grand Pierre, le Pointu and le Rayas). Vinified in concrete and aged in foudre, it's a pretty, charming effort, with floral notes reminiscent of roses and lavender balanced by hints of rosemary, black cherries and just a touch of dark chocolate. Full-bodied and rich, it's loaded with concentrated fruit yet finishes long and silky. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.
- James Suckling: This is very showy, with sparks of anise, black tea and woodspice being thrown off from a core of steeped blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry pate de fruit notes. A terrific graphite spine gives this all form, while the fruit drives authoritatively through the finish. A beauty.
Producer Information
Domaine la Barroche is a family-owned wine producer based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine was founded in 1703 by Alexandre Barrot and today cultivates the classic southern Rhône grape varieties Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as Cinsault, Clairette Blanche and Vaccarèse. The domaine's Grenache vines date back to the first part of the 19th Century, with older grape varieties such as Terret Noir and Clairette Rose also planted in the vineyard. In total, Domaine la Barroche encompasses 15 hectares (36 acres) of vines planted across the northern and northeastern sections of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are cultivated on a variety of vineyard plots including Les Terres Blanches, Les Cabrières and Grand Pierre. In these plots, sandy topsoils and large pebbles (the iconic rolled pebbles, or "galets roulés") lie on deeper layers of limestone, with other plots occupying soils of red clay and red sandstone.
