2019 | Clonakilla | Shiraz/Viognier

Clonakilla was established in 1971 by John Kirk, a Canberra based research scientist of Irish descent. Their speciality is this Northern Rhône blend of Shiraz with 6% of co-fermented Viognier. The newly-released 2019 vintage has a lovely freshness and purity, with crushed berry aromas, a musky floral thread, hints of spice, dry herbs and understated smoky oak. Delicious right now as a young wine but it also has a serious cellaring potential.

• Wine Enthusiast: Clonakilla's Shiraz-Viognier was one of the first of its kind, ushering in a new era of more delicately aromatic and succulent Shiraz Down Under. It remains a benchmark of the style. The color of cherry juice, it's beautifully perfumed, with aromas of rose petals and white pepper atop earthier, meatier notes. Warm stone undertones back fresh squeezed raspberry, cherry and cranberry juice. In the mouth there's a succulence to the brambly fruit that comes like the pop of a fresh red berry in the mouth. Crunchy acidity and the raspy power of sappy, fine tannins add structure and complexity.

Clonakilla is an Australian winery, located in Murrumbateman of the Canberra wine region. It was founded by John Kirk in 1971, with the inaugural vintage in 1976 the first from the entire region.Therefore, Clonakilla is best known for putting the Australian town of Canberra on the map as a wine producing region.The first plantings on the estate property were of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and, today, also include Viognier, Pinot Noir, Semillon and Chardonnay.The flagship wine from Clonakilla is a blend of Shiraz and Viognier. The two grapes are co-fermented and the resulting wine is rich, deep and dark with notes of white pepper, black fruits and sweet white flowers. The grapes that produce this wine come from the finest plots in the Clonakilla Murrumbateman vineyards.
