Red Wine: 2019 | MacDonald Vineyards | Cabernet Sauvignon (3 Bottles)

Gorgeous bay leaf, alder smoke and warmed black currant confiture aromas and flavors take the lead, but it’s a close race with waves of warm stone, freshly plowed loam, singed tobacco and savory accents joining in. This has muscle, definition and drive, with a cast iron note adding a growl of terroir through the finish.

        • Jeb Dunnuck: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is another incredibly brilliant wine from this estate that's up with the greatest wines in the vintage (and the world). From a tiny parcel of very old vines in the To Kalon Vineyard, it reveals a semi-opaque deep purple color to go with an incredible nose of crème de cassis, black olive, iron, tobacco, and lead pencil. As textbook Oakville as it gets with its darker, herbal, yet powerful style, it's medium to full-bodied and has a wonderful sense of elegance and purity, silky tannins, and a great, great finish. It certainly offers incredible pleasure today, as do most 2019s, yet it deserves 4-6 years of bottle age and I suspect will be 30+ year wine. If you get a chance to buy this, do it.
        • Vinous: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerhouse wine in line with years like 2013 and 2016, but with a bit more plushness in the mid-palate fruit. The aromatics alone are just mesmerizing. Veins of supporting tannin convey freshness and energy throughout. This is such a riveting and promising wine.

        Producer Information

MacDonald Vineyard is an Oakville based producer in the heart of the Napa Valley. The 15 acre (6 hectare) estate is apart of the historical To Kalon vineyard - one of the most famous and valued plots of vineyard in the country. Current proprietors, brothers Alex and Graeme MacDonald, inherited the estate from their great-grandparents who established the vineyard post Prohibition. The inaugural yield was sold to neighbouring Robert Mondavi Winery initiating a contract that remains upheld to this day. Currently, 10 acres of the estate is sold to Mondavi although the future of this contract remains unclear. Planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, the MacDonald estate has some of the oldest vines in the Napa Valley that were planted in 1954. These gnarly vines produced small yields of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds. Since inheriting the estate, Alex and Graeme have returned the viticulture to more old school practices including dry farming. The inaugural vintage of varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the MacDonalds brand was released in 2012. Over the past decade, it has been continually met with high-acclaim from critics and consumers alike. Approximately 500 cases are released to mailing list subscribers each vintage.
