Distillery Information

Shabo Wines is an Ukrainian wine producer, located on the south coast of the Black Sea in the major wine producing region of Odessa. It was founded in 2003 by the Iukuridze family in a historic winery thought to be the oldest in the country. The estate is located within the town of Shabo which was a former Swiss colony founded some 200 years ago. Although the Swiss were driven out during the Second World War, they brought grapevines to the area to establish the viticultural industry. Here, the proximity to the coast moderates the temperatures to create a favourable macroclimate for grape growing. The 1200 hectares (2965 acres) of estate vineyards are planted to over 20 different grape varieties including the native Telti-Kuruk (Turkish for "fox tail" due to the shape of the bunches) variety which can be cultivated as both a table and wine grape. Other white grape varieties cultivated include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling whilst Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Saperavi compose the red plots of the estate. The leading range of the portfolio is Grande Reserve, a collection of premium aged wines sourced from the best plots of vines. In 2012, the first Ukrainian appellation of controlled origin wines (PDO) was established due to the high-acclaim that the Grande Reserve collection received on an international level. A majority of the remaining porfolio is composed of sparkling wines in sweet, semi-sweet and brut styles produced via the charmat method with brandy and cognac also featuring heavily.
