        Producer Information

Frédéric Esmonin is a Burgundian wine producer, situated in the Côtes de Nuits district. The 4 hectare (9 acre) domaine was established by André Esmonin in the 1970s. Frédéric Esmonin, cousin to fellow domaine-owner Sylvie Esmonin, joined his father in the running of the family business in 1988 and, in the same year, the domaine began bottling and selling its wines entirely independently. Concurrently to this, Frédéric Esmonin also founded a négociant brand called Les Estournelles. The domaine has two grand cru vineyard plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, planted between 1949 and 1959 – Mazis- and Ruchottes-Chambertin – as well as three premier cru climats – Champonnet, Lavaut Saint-Jacques and Estournelles-Saint-Jacques. The domaine ages its wines in wooden casks for between 14 to 17 months. Typically, the grand cru and Lavaut Saint-Jacques Premier Cru wines see 80 percent new oak, whereas the village-level wines are aged in 20 percent new oak. Racking only takes place when the wine is ready to be bottled (without filtration). The domaine's Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard site sits atop hard soils, while the Ruchottes-Chambertin vineyard plot is located on lighter soils. Frédéric Esmonin's Premier Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques vineyard site lies adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin's most revered Premier Cru climat – Clos Saint-Jacques. These vines are planted in clay soils with southeast exposures. Frédéric Esmonin also makes three village-level wines: a Clos Prieur, one vielles vignes and a village.
