Detailed Description
This is the estate’s flagship wine, the definitive version of which was established in 2003 as a blend of seven red grapes grown on the estate, the percentages of which change year-by-year. It ages in French oak barrels, only a third of which are new wood, for around 18 months and then a further six months in cement. 2006 was a wonderful year characterized by a nice concentration of aromas and an excellent maturity. The color, which is still very intact, has a few garnet reflections. The bouquet is intense and wrapping with hints of fruit, some vegetal notes and sweet spicy ones like cardamom that have aged nicely. The mouthfeel is still fresh and has a fine salinity, with soft and yet dense tannins. Both dense and drinkable, it closes with a very harmonious finish.
Producer Information
Caiarossa is a Tuscan wine estate situated to the southeast of the city of Pisa. It produces a range of regional Tuscan wines that largely fall under the Toscana IGT classification. When the estate was first established in 1998, it was done so with a clear focus on organic agricultural practices. Biodynamic and organic farming approaches are still applied throughout the 31 hectares (77 acres) of vineyards. The soils are typified by jasper, rock and pebbles and are planted to a total of 10 grape varieties. These are Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Alicante, Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay and Petit Manseng. The winery is divided into four separate levels, thereby allowing the application of a gravity-flow fermentation system. The red grape varieties are destemmed and fermented in cement and oak tanks. After fermentation and malolactic fermentation with indigenous yeasts the wines are aged in a combination of barriques, tonneaux and large oak casks and, once aged, spend approximately one year in cement tanks.
