      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2011 Barolo Riserva is a dark and tarry expression of Nebbiolo that shows much of the depth and sophistication that you can expect of this grape as it evolves over time. The 2011 vintage was a hot one, and the primary fruit has faded in this seven-year-old wine. Dried berry, rose petal and chopped mint leaves appear on the close. The mouthfeel offers loose texture and mild intensity.
      • Wine Spectator: Balsamic aromas of juniper, rosemary and pine mesh nicely with the cherry, plum and raspberry fruit in this expressive yet solidly structured red. Chalky tannins play out on the finish, along with mineral and ripe fruit accents.

      Producer Information

Marchesi di Barolo is an Italian wine estate in Piedmont, particularly known for its single-vineyard and riserva wines from the Nebbiolo grape. The historic estate often releases older vintages demonstrating the ageworthiness of the wines. The estate controls around 120 hectares (297 acres) of vineyards and makes a wide portfolio of wines from all of the principal varieties of the region. Unsurprisingly, Barolo forms the heart of the range. The flagship single-vineyard wine is the Barolo Cannubi, from a large holding in the famous vineyard. The Barolo Riserva is made from various parcels vinified separately then blended after aging. Winemaking combines the modern and traditional; depending on the wine, large Slavonian oak casks between 3000 and 18000 liters might be combined for aging purposes with barriques or stainless steel tanks. The business was established in the early 1800s, when the Marquis of Barolo married the French noblewoman Juliette Colbert. She provided the impetus to the development of the estate that bore her husband's name. Five generations of the Abbona family have now owned and managed the company.
