• Wine Advocate: This barrel sample of 2015 Soul Of A Lion is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers up a nose of crème de cassis, mocha, dusty soil and spice box. The rich, medium to full-bodied palate is all earthy/meaty/gamey at this primary stage, rich with firm, chewy tannins and finishing long with lovely expression.

• James Suckling: Rich and firm, with a solid core of dark berry, plum, blueberry and blackberry flavors that fan out evenly on the palate, ending with a burst of melted black licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Producer Information

Founders George and Daniel Daou began searching for the vineyards that would comprise the DAOU estate in the mid 2000s - their objective was to find the perfect terroir for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. They eventually settled on an estate in the Adelaida District AVA in San Luis Obispo County, specifically a plot once singled out by oenologist André Tchelistcheff as being of great potential. It's rare to find high quality Cabernet Sauvginon in Paso Robles, rare even to find anyone vinifying the grape here, but the high altitude of the site combined with a forensic approach in the vineyard and winery have allowed the team at DAOU to produce some truly fantastic wines. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignons are dense, intense reds that are set to age for many decades. Mayote is a Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah blend while the estate Chardonnay is a surprisingly elegant entry in the portfolio.
