Detailed Description
Detailed Description
As the market for the sweet wines of Sauternes declines, many producers are turning to dry white wines and with some extremely impressive results. This dry wine from Chateau Guiraud, one of the grandest properties in the region, is made from equal parts semillon and sauvignon grapes a proportion of which is fermented in old Sauternes casks. So though this is a bone dry wine, you're getting some of the heady exotic fruit character of a sweet wine. At five years old, this is drinking beautifully now and would be a great accompaniment to richer fish dishes.
Reviews:
- Wine Spectator: Plump and friendly, with tangerine, peach and nectarine notes forming the core. The rounded finish has a flattering hint, along with a thread of quinine that keeps this honest. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2020.
- James Suckling: Pretty deepness and ripeness to this with honeydew, dried-melon and lemon character. Medium body.
Producer Information
Throughout its history, Chateau Guiraud, Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, has always been proud of its independence and has always followed its own path. This domain, with its 128 hectares situated exclusively around the village of Sauternes and its unique combination of grape varieties, is one of the rare properties in France to have created its own conservatory of vine stock varieties. In 1996, ever faithful to its pioneering spirit, the vineyard underwent a cultural revolution under the impulse of Xavier Planty, who was at the time manager of Chateau Guiraud, which prohibits the use of all synthetic products. In 2011 Chateau Guiraud became the first Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 to be awarded Agriculture Biologique (AB) certification. The philosophy at Chateau Guiraud is guided by constant questioning and their desire to let nature take its course, thus allowing the vines to achieve their full potential.
