        Producer Information

Situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, Taaibosch’s story began in the early 1690’s when the property was first surveyed and granted to early settlers. It was in the possession of the De Villiers family until 1838 when the estate changed hands for the first time. In the same year the farm’s historical homestead was built which still stands today. In the mid 1990’s the property began producing its own wines under the name Cordoba. These wines quickly gained fame and by the late 1990’s Cordoba had become a cult brand and an icon of South Africa under the guidance of winemaker Chris Keet. At the time, it was the first Cabernet Franc driven Bordeaux blend to be produced in South Africa. Unfortunately, in the early 2000’s the cellar was made dormant and wine was no longer produced under its infamous name. In 2016 this changed when the Oddo family of France purchased the property and through meticulous care, rejuvenated the vineyards and built a new state of the art cellar. The Oddo family also owns Piton Sancerre and Vallon des Glauges domain in France and Serra Ferdinand in Sicily in partnership with the Planeta estate. The new name bestowed on the property was Taaibosch, which originates from the prevalent indigenous fijnbos plant found on the estate. Cellar master, Schalk-Willem Joubert, swiftly commenced the farm’s conversion to organic. Minimalistic intervention is applied throughout the winemaking process at Taaibosch. Once handpicked the grapes are carefully brought to the cellar for quality sorting before entering the cellar environment. The cellar system at Taaibosch is gravitational to allow for gentle handling of the grapes and primary juice throughout the initial phase of vinification. This ultimately gives the wines a refined tannin structure characterized by balanced tension and longevity, not only in taste but also in terms of aging ability in bottle. The flagship wine “Crescendo” is a Bordeaux blend that will always be defined by its Cabernet Franc. Situated in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean on predominantly Table Mountain Sandstone covering Granite, its red soils are recognizable and amongst the best in the region. Taaibosch also sits on a lens of withered Malmesbury shale, setting it apart from other vineyards in the region. In conservation efforts, since the redevelopment of the Taaibosch property, a rigorous regime was adopted to clear alien vegetation and to rehabilitate with natural flora indigenous to the Cape. The farm’s surface area footprint consists of 55% natural flora and 45% vineyard plantings and buildings.
