Red Wine: 2019 | Serafin | Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Rich purple, just a little bit meaty. There is a wealth of fruit from the start on the palate, very clean, fills the front of the mouth then continues through to managed wood tannins at the back. Good long clean finish.

        Reviews:

        • Burghound: Here the equally brooding and restrained nose is compositionally quite similar to the straight Gevrey villages except that the sauvage character is more pronounced and the fruit is slightly riper. There is more size, weight and mid-palate density to the intense and serious middle weight plus flavors as the old vines are in evident and especially so on the youthfully austere, rustic and highly complex finale. As it seemingly always does, this built-to-age effort boxes above its weight.
        • Wine Spectator: Jasper Morris: 100% new wood. Rich purple, just a little bit meaty. There is a wealth of fruit from the start on the palate, very clean, fills the front of the mouth then continues through to managed wood tannins at the back. Good long clean finish.

        Producer Information

Sérafin Père et Fils, also known as Domaine Christian Sérafin, is a Burgundian estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, producing wines from Pinot Noir across Gevrey and neighboring appellations in the Côte de Nuits. It has been held in high regard both at home and in export markets since a run of excellent vintages in the 1990s.The estate was formed in 1947 by Polish immigrant Stanislaus Sérafin, who had previously worked as a mason. His son Christian inherited the business in 1988, having been winemaker for the previous two decades. Now himself retired, his winemaker niece and his daughter run the estate. There are just 5.18 hectares (12.8 acres) of vineyards. About half of these are village-level Gevrey-Chambertin. There are also parcels in three premier cru vineyards in the village, plus a precious 0.31 hectare (0.77 acre) plot in Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
