Producer Information
Chalone Vineyard is situated in the remote AVA (American Viticultural Area) of the same name in California's Monterey County. The 250 acre (101 hectare) estate is largely planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – Chalone Vineyard's two flagship grape varieties. Charles Tam established the first vineyards here in 1919, planting Chenin Blanc in the limestone slopes at 1800 feet (549 meters) above the Salinas Valley. This elevation provides significant diurnal temperature variations throughout the growing season. Today, these Chenin Blanc vines are some of the oldest cultivated vines in Monterey County. The original vineyards were later expanded in 1946, with the planting of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir vines. In 1965, the estate was acquired by Richard Graff and, one year later, he released his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard name. Increased vineyard plantings followed in 1970 and in 1998 a large replanting program was initiated, including the planting of the estate's first Syrah wines. The vineyards lie in the foothills of an extinct volcano on the outskirts of the Pinnacles National Park. The limestone-rich soils found here contain pockets of granite and clay, a combination which preferentially limits vine vigor and crop yields. Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache all feature in the estate's red wine portfolio, while Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Blanc make up the estate's white wine offerings. In the winery, French oak barrels are sourced for the barrel-aging regime with the portion of new employed depending on the wine and vintage.
