te Pa (styled with a lower-case t) is a wine producer located in the Marlborough region in the north of New Zealand's South Island. Best known internationally for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, its broad portfolio with several sub-brands covers many other varieties, and features from several other wine regions. The business' roots go back to 2003 when Haysley MacDonald and his family began to convert their dairy and crop farm to vineyards. The te Pa label itself was launched in 2011. Haysley can trace his ancestry back to the earky Maori settlers who landed on the Wairau Bar around 800 years ago. Te Pa now farms nearly 500ha (1235 acres) across Marlborough. The Home vineyard is located on the Wairau Bar and covers 100 hectares (247 acres). Riverside Vineyard is another principal property on the Wairau Bar, where there are a rich variation of soils. The Wairau River to the south and the ocean at Cloudy Bay to the east, airflow moderates temperatures and provides airflow through the vines. There are two main vineyards in the cooler Awatere Valley further south ; Hillside and Redwood Hill. The former features clay and stoney loam, while the latter is more clay-based. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are grown here. Other smaller vineyards are located around the region. These include the 20ha (49-acre) Alabama Vineyard in the heart of Blenheim.
