Chichibu 2016 Cask #7178 is a rare Japanese single-cask whisky distilled at the renowned Chichibu Distillery and bottled in 2024 after approximately eight years of maturation. The whisky was matured in a first-fill red wine cask, bringing pronounced berry fruit, wine tannins, vanilla, spice, and oak to Chichibu's naturally vibrant malt character. The relatively young spirit retains its fresh, energetic personality while the wine cask adds richness, colour, and layers of dark fruit. Nose: Red berries, raspberry, cherry, grape skin, sweet malt, vanilla, orange peel, dark fruit, gentle spice, and fresh oak.

Palate: Rich malt, strawberries, red cherries, blackberry, red wine sweetness, vanilla, caramel, citrus, baking spice, gentle tannins, and toasted oak.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering red fruit, grape, vanilla, sweet malt, gentle pepper, wine tannins, and polished oak.

Distillery Information

The Chichibu distillery in the Saitama Prefecture of Japan is the brainchild of Ichiro Akuto, who founded the distillery in 2008. The first new distillery built in Japan since the 1970s, Chichibu is rather small but produced some mightily marvellous malts, with a good helping of peat warmth behind some of them. A portion of the barley Chichibu uses is grown locally, and they use a wide selection of cask styles to mature the whisky. Their first release - the aptly named Chichibu The First - made its way to shelves in 2011, and though subsequent releases have been somewhat infrequent, they have been well received.
