Whiskey: Clynelish Select Reserve (Special Release 2015) | 700ML

Super buttery at first, rather than waxy per se, it's like custard. There's some jaffa cake in there, but it's more cake than jaffa, pepper too.

Detailed Description

The second Select Reserve from Diageo's Special Releases, Jim Beveridge has again been busy hand-selecting Clynelish casks. Yep, we're all jealous of him too! Liquid was chosen from ex-bourbon first-fill American oak barrels, rejuvenated and refill American oak hogsheads, and ex-Sherry and refill European oak butts - no stone was left unturned it seems. A release of 2,946 individually numbered bottles.

Clynelish Select Reserve (Special Release 2015) | 700ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Super buttery at first, rather than waxy per se, it's like custard. There's some jaffa cake in there, but it's more cake than jaffa, pepper too.

Palate: Custard and cocoa, thick, delicious and comforting.

Finish: Spicy and sweet with a hint of salinity.

Distillery Information

Founded in 1819, under the name Clynelish, the distillery was established by the Marquis of Stafford who, after marrying into the Sutherland family, became the first Duke of Sutherland. The distillery was initially intended to take some proportion of local whisky supply away from the area's smuggling fraternity. After purchase in 1896 by James Ainslie & Heilbron, a Glasgow-based blending company, the distillery was rebuilt and still retains the floor maltings and kiln that were then installed. In 1967, a build commenced on a new distillery, also named Clynelish, located just across the road from the original Clynelish. The build was completed a year later and the former Clynelish distillery was renamed Brora (pronounced ‘Broar-err’) in 1969. The name derives from the Old Norse ‘Bru’r aa’ meaning ‘the bridges river’.
