      Detailed Description

This wine has very pleasant and lovely aromas. On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied.

        Producer Information

Jacques Puffeney is a wine producer in the Arbois area of Jura, in eastern France. Puffeney began working a small plot of vines with his father, a vineyard worker, in 1962. They were able to release their first vintage in 1964, and since then Puffeney has become a significant figure in Jura, earning the nickname "the Pope of Arbois". Puffeney's name is most associated with Savagnin, the signature white grape of the region, and the Jura's oxidative Vin Jaune wines. The latter is barrel aged under a thin layer of yeast called a voile (French for "veil" and similar to a flor in Sherry). Puffeney was not limited to Savignin, however. Jura appellation rules allow for four other grape varieties, and Puffeney grows them all. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the most internationally recognized, but Puffeney's Pinot Noir was his least planted, with only 0.6 hectares (1.5 acres). The other red grapes are Trousseau and Poulsard. Puffeney has released more than 50 vintages and received international recognition for the quality of his wines. He gained a following in the United States while shipping only 800 cases annually (roughly 40 percent of his total production) mostly to the east coast. Since the beginning of 2015, Puffeney has gone into semi-retirement, leasing his vineyards to Domaine du Pélican, owned by Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. The 2014 vintage will still be vinified and sold by Jacques Puffeney and the last wine to be released will be his 2014 Vin Jaune in 2021: the minimum required aging of Vin Jaune is six years in barrel, but Puffeney's wines average closer to eight years. French wine laws restrict the amount of vineyard land that retired winemakers can work, allowing Puffeney to keep a small plot of Trousseau and Savagnin vines with the aim of producing around 2000 bottles a year. He has not sold the rights to his family name.
