Deep purple tinged color. Concentrated dark fruit aromas with licorice and violet and white pepper notes. The palate is rich and broad with layers of fruit and fine-grained tannin structure.

• Wine Enthusiast: Although it took a little while to open up, the wine eventually expresses itself beautifully with deep notes of crushed purple florals, black cherry and blueberry along with a hint of game. Lush and full with a satiny texture, the mouth is heady and satisfying with a concentrated fruit core supported by cedar and mocha on the close.

• Decanter: Rich and brooding nose of blackcurrant jam, sea salted liquorice, herbal notes and black olives. Tightly knit firm tannins on the palate, with a graphite mineral finish.

Producer Information

Stark-Condé is a South African wine producer created in 1998 by Cuban-American José Stark. Today, the winery produces around 6000 cases of wine a year, and is known for producing some of the best red wines in South Africa. After working as a graphic designer, Stark moved to South Africa in 1997 with his wife Marie and settled on her family's estate in the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch. Stark experimented with a few barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon on the property, which was then known as Oude Nektar. It was met with high acclaim from critics and the company was established soon after. Oude Nektar is still produced by the company to this day. Stark-Condé has about 40 hectares (100 acres) in the Jonkershoek Valley, which is considered to be a prime region for red varieties. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes at 150 to 600 meters (500-2000ft) above sea level, providing excellent drainage which helps to curb the vines' vigor. This redirects energy into berry ripening to produce concentrated examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Three Pines is Stark-Condé's flagship lineup, and is named for the three pine trees on the top of the hill that overlook the winery. There are also Stellenbosch-designated wines; a Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more recently a white field blend of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Verdelho are produced.
