The Portuguese are credited with the introduction of grafting technology to India to enable cultivation and reproduction of the finest varieties of mango trees. The Alphonso is a rare treat as it is harvested for a few weeks during the months of April or May in select regions along the western part of India and therefore commands a premium price.
