Agustí Torelló Mata is a highly prestigious, family-owned sparkling wine estate based in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Catalonia, universally celebrated as a definitive benchmark for world-class, cellar-worthy Cava. Founded in 1955 by iconic enologist and "Cava evangelist" Agustí Torelló Mata—who pioneered the region's very first wine analysis laboratory in 1953 at just 18 years old—the estate is currently directed by two of his children, Alex and Gemma Torelló. Producing roughly 500,000 bottles of sparkling wine and 150,000 bottles of organic still wines annually, the house is highly regarded for its uncompromising commitment to terroir, utilizing old vines over 30 years of age planted across three distinct microclimates in the Penedès region. Unlike mass-production facilities, the winery strictly focuses on the indigenous "holy trinity" of Catalan varieties—Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada—crafting exclusively at the premium Reserva and Gran Reserva levels with zero added sugar (Brut Nature) to allow pure regional expression. The absolute crown jewel of their portfolio is "Kripta", a legendary, complex Gran Reserva launched in 1978 that is aged for up to eight years on its lees and instantly recognized by its unique, hand-labeled, amphora-shaped rounded bottle designed explicitly so it must be chilled in an ice bucket rather than set flat on a table.
