      Detailed Description

Beautifully fresh and perfumed on the nose, with raspberry, crème de cassis, roasted meat, and spring flower like qualities, this full-bodied, voluptuously styled beauty has copious amount of sweet fruit, a silky, sexy texture, and a lengthy finish where more structure and tannin emerges. Despite all of the fruit here, this still needs short term cellaring.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 2009 Booker Vineyard is 70% Syrah and 30% Mourvedre from one of the rockiest, steepest hillsides in Paso Robles. Layers of dark fruit, spices, tar and licorice emerge from the glass in this deep, sensual wine. Booker usually sees the highest percentage of new oak, and elements of spiciness come through on the finish, although some of the oakiness blows off with time in the glass. Booker is another site Smith planted and continues to pull fruit from, in this case three blocks of Syrah and one of Mourvedre. In 2009 there were two lots; the first 100% Syrah vinified with 20-25% stems, the second a Syrah/Mourvedre co-ferment. Both lots were blended for the finished wine.
        • Vinous: Opaque purple. Wild, expressive aromas of dark berries, cherry-cola, candied licorice, woodsmoke and Indian spices. Sappy and expansive, with excellent clarity and depth, and a seamless character, to its sweet blackberry and mulberry flavors. Becomes spicier with air and finishes with superb energy and lingering sweetness.

        Producer Information

Saxum Vineyards is a Californian wine producer in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. It is known for its portfolio of red blends produced from the key Rhône varieties: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The estate was planted at the end of the 1980s with a majority of vines now over 40 years of age. Located a mere 10 miles (16km) from the coast, unearthed fossilized whale bones have been discovered here requiring a jack hammer to plant the vines. Planted throughout an undulating landscape the vineyards are located on slopes at an altitude of approximately 1200 feet (365 meters).Saxum's portfolio now features a collection of proprietary cuvées. The Rhône varieties reign supreme, but there are small plantings of other grapes like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, which are used in small amounts. Strict yields inform the limited production of roughly 5500 cases annually.
