The estate was established in 1991, after Ed King Jr and his son Ed King III had bought a 418 hectare (1033 acre) cattle farm. They planted the property with 450 hectares (1112 acres) of vines and have farmed it strictly using organic practices since. In the mid 2000s, it was one of the largest single-block organic vineyards in the world. Most fruit for King Estate's wines come from this vineyard and the surrounding Willamette Valley, but it sources fruit from the Columbia Valley and the greater Oregon area as well. King Estate was one of the early promoters of Pinot Gris in Oregon, where it has since become the second-most planted variety behind Pinot Noir.
