      Producer Information

Mastroberardino is an Italian wine producer known for championing the local varieties of Campania, and for its part in several of its sub-regions gaining DOCG status. It is most famous for its Aglianico-based wines made under the Taurasi DOCG, but makes a wide range of wines from across the region. The estate's history began in the mid 18th century in Avellino when it was founded by Pietro di Berardino, but it was in 1878 when it was officially founded as a winery by Angelo Mastroberardino. Since World War II, Mastroberardino has grown in size and has become most influential winery in the Campania region. The winery accounted for more than half of the region's production for much of the 20th Century, and at one point more than 90 percent of the Taurasi DOCG output. The modern winery produces roughly 150,000 cases annually. When other Italian and Campania producers began to introduce international varieties to boost sales, Mastroberardino doubled down on efforts to refine – and preserve – quality local varieties like Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso and Sciascinoso, working with ampelographers to prevent the grapes from disappearing. The catalogue of wines is fairly large, but the most renowned offerings come from the three DOCG regions the estate has vineyards in: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Taurasi in particular has been successful for Mastroberardino, with the Radici Riserva Taurasi being the most highly regarded. In 1996, Mastroberardino started the Villa dei Misteri project in tandem with Pompeii excavations. This project uses viticultural techniques and grape varieties from ancient Rome, with the aim of capturing the style of wine of the Roman Empire. It goes as far as to use fruit from vineyards planted within excavation sites in Pompeii. The majority of Villa dei Misteri wine is sold at auction with proceeds funding research of historical viticultural sites in Campania.
