      • Burghound: Strong wood influence dominates the nose, leading to sappy, sweet, utterly delicious flavors whose only drawback is that they're not particularly concentrated. I like the intensity and persistence though my score assumes that the oak will integrate.

      Producer Information

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is a producer in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy that specializes in producing wines made from Pinot Noir. The domaine has its origins in vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin purchased in 1850 by Jean-Baptiste Laroze. Eventually Alexandre Drouhin took over the estate, bringing his family vines from Chambolle-Musigny and incorporating them under Domaine Drouhin-Laroze. Today the family owns 11.5 hectares (28.5 acres) of vines spread throughout Burgundy and is run by the fifth and sixth generation of the family. The domaine owns vineyards in six grand cru appellations in the Côte de Nuits: Musigny, Chambertin Clos de Béze, Clos de Vougeot, Bonnes-Mares, Latricières-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. It also has plots in four premier cru regions and three village appellations. The grapes are all hand-harvested and transported to the winery in Gevrey-Chambertin. Grand cru wines are aged in 100 percent new oak, premier cru wines in 50 percent new oak and village wines in first-fill barrels. All of the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. In 2008, the family created Maison Laroze de Drouhin, a négociant business, in order to extend the range of wines. The maison purchases grapes from a range of growers, and makes the wines at the winery in Gevrey-Chambertin. Laroze de Drouhin has access to grapes from grand cru vineyards like Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin, as well as village plots in Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The family also produces a generic Bourgogne Chardonnay and Bourgogne Pinot Noir. As with the domaine, grand cru wines are aged exclusively in new French oak barrels and the production is extremely small – there are usually only two barrels each of Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin produced each vintage.
