      Detailed Description

The deep purple-tinged 2005 possesses wonderful notes of sweet cherries, creme de cassis, smoke, creamy oak, and spice box.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Another "best ever" performance, the Grand-Puy-Ducasse is made in a charming style for a 2005 Pauillac. This deep ruby-hued, very concentrated, precocious, showy effort displays copious quantities of sweet oak intermixed with black cherries, black currants, velvety tannins, medium body, and loads of fruit.
      • Decanter: Ripe and forward in its mix of cherries and currants, and filled out with rich oak, hints of coffee and a light touch of root-beer-like sweetness, this bottling is fairly seductive at the start, but its generous fruit and supple texture both give ground to plenty of youthfully tough tannins on the latter palate.

      Producer Information

Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is a wine estate in Pauillac. Under the name Artigues Arnaud, it was rated as a Fifth Growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. The Grand Vin is a Bordeaux-blend of predominately Merlot complimented with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are hand-harvested and selections take place both in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery. It is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and is aged for 18-24 months in French oak barrels with a proportion of new wood. A second wine, Prélude à Grand-Puy Ducasse, is made from younger vines. This is aged for around the same duration as the Grand Vin but with only 10 to 15-percent new oak. The estate has 99 acres (40ha) under vine that is divided into three distinct plots. These parcels border Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet to the north, and cover part of the shallow hill called Grand Puy. The vineyards are around 62 percent Cabernet Sauvignon on silica and gravel soils, and 38 percent Merlot on sandy gravel soils.
