2006 | Château Phélan Ségur | Saint-Estephe

In recent years, the Gardiniers of Phélan-Ségur seem to have become preoccupied with wood, generally too much. It's the same in 2006, and it is a shame, because everything else about this wine is balanced—the fruit is ripe and sweet and there is some freshness from a cranberry note. It just needs the wood to become less dominant.

• Wine Advocate: A very good effort from this estate, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 reveals sweet, smoky black currant fruit along with a hint of crushed rocks which provides a distinctive minerality. Round, ripe, and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin, it can be consumed over the next decade.

• James Suckling: Raspberry, mineral and dried herbs, such as thyme and nutmeg. Very perfumed. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a chewy yet polished finish. Structured.

Château Phélan Ségur is a wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe region of the Médoc, northern Bordeaux. The grand vin is typically composed of 50 to 65 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder made up from Merlot. It is regarded as one of the better estates omitted from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It belongs to the Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux, and is classified in the Place de Bordeaux in the category of "Grand Crus Classés et assimilés (and equivalents)". It was rated as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003, but has not been part of that ranking since 2007.
