      Detailed Description

Unsurprisingly, the wine owes its name to its remarkable aroma of violets. This 100% Merlot is matured for an average of 24 months in tanks and casks (60% new wood each year), and presents great depth. In addition to violet, blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry are also present. This olfactory signature alone is enough to ensure the wine's uniqueness. The mouthfeel is all about refinement and precision.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The first vintage from new proprietor Catherine Pere Verge, the 2007 La Violette is a 100% Merlot made from yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare. Aromas of violets, blueberries, raspberries, and lavender emerge from this perfumed wine. It is not the biggest Pomerol in 2007 (Clinet and Le Gay qualify for that prize), but it is ethereal in its finesse, purity, intensity, and layered mouthfeel. Luscious and delicate with admirable intensity, this beauty comes from a very special terroir. Sadly, production is so tiny, few consumers will ever get a chance to taste it.
        • Falstaff: Strong ruby garnet, violet rim lightening. Inviting dark berry fruit on the nose, delicate hints of orange, fine minerality, complex bouquet. Highly elegant on the palate, full-bodied, wonderful extract sweetness, heart cherry, acid structure rich in finesse, combines the opulence of the fruit sweetness with a very good structure, very elegant material, extremely fresh and with a convincing length.

        Producer Information

ChĂąteau La Violette is a highly regarded wine produced from two small vineyard sites in the coveted Pomerol appellation in northeast Bordeaux, on the so-called Right Bank of the Dordogne river, just north of Liborne. The estate makes a limited-production wine entirely from Merlot, although earlier vintages may contain a small portion of Cabernet Franc – long since replanted. La Violette is one of several estates owned by Vignobles PĂ©rĂ©-VergĂ©, a wine portfolio formerly overseen by high-profile Bordeaux doyenne, the late Catherine PĂ©rĂ©-VergĂ©. The PĂ©rĂ©-VergĂ© portfolio includes the other Pomerol sites ChĂąteau le Gay and ChĂąteau Montviel. These are now run by PĂ©rĂ©-VergĂ©'s son, Henri Parent ChĂąteau La Violette's wine is made from two vineyard sites spanning a total of 1.8 hectares (4.4 acres), bought by PĂ©rĂ©-VergĂ© in 2006. The vineyard is further divided into four plots of vines, some planted in the 1950s, and farmed by the same workers as Montviel and Le Gay. The original Cabernet Franc plantings were replaced entirely with Merlot, which suits the high clay content of the soil. Violette practices debudding, green harvesting, and makes two or three passes during harvest based on the vine age and individual plots. The grapes are harvested and destemmed by hand before fermenting and aging in entirely new French oak for 12 to 18 months. La Violette makes fewer than 400 cases a year of its single wine.
