2007 | Domaine Dujac | Charmes Chambertin

This release comes from Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, where Domaine Dujac owns a 0.7-hectare plot. The 2007 vintage produced low yields but wines of textbook balance, charm and depth. Here the nose displays both upper and lower register aromas of elegant red berry fruit, floral notes and plenty of Gevrey-style earth plus a hint of the sauvage that carries over to the intense yet supple and detailed medium-bodied flavors that are balanced, complex, sappy and impressively persistent.

Reviews:

• Int'l Wine Cellar: Medium red. Reticent aromas of red fruits lifted by spicy oak and a note of rose petal. Tactile and pliant but a bit simple and inexpressive today. Offers enticing sweetness but this is closed and in need of patience. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins.

• John Gilman: The Charmes ’07 was served by Jacques Seysses ahead of the Chambolle and Vosne premier crus simply to keep the Gevrey them going from the Combottes, rather than jumping back and forth amongst communes. The wine was still in tank awaiting its bottling in the coming weeks, and showed quite well despite its recent assemblage. The nose is a lovely and classy blend of red and black cherries, plums, chocolate, fresh herbs, soil and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and showing a bit of tannin after its recent racking, but with lovely integration of its structural elements, a sappy core, fine focus and plenty of grip on the complex finish.

Producer Information

Domaine Dujac is a highly regarded and critically lauded wine producer based in Burgundy's Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. It makes high-quality wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, ranging from entry-level Bourgogne to wines made from some of the top Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, including Clos de la Roche and Le Chambertin. The domaine was founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses, who had spent the previous few years travelling around Burgundy learning the craft from the likes of Aubert de Villaine at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Charles Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau. He purchased a small, run-down property in Morey-Saint-Denis and planted some Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the late 20th Century, Dujac expanded its estate, acquiring grand cru plots in Clos de la Roche (the domaine has just under two hectares/five acres here), Clos St-Denis (1.4 hectares/3.4 acres) and in northern Bonnes-Mares (nearly 0.6 hectares/1.5 acres). Dujac has also expanded further afield, taking control of plots in Romanée-Saint-Vivant (0.17 hectares/0.4 acres) and Le Chambertin (almost 0.3 hectares/0.7 acres), in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin respectively.
