      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: Assuming one can find any of the 500 or so cases that are made, the wine 'to die for' is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure. This is 100% Grenache from vines that are about 110 years of age! Aged both in foudre and tank prior to being bottled unfiltered, in its three versions to date, it is undeniably one of the greatest expressions of pure Grenache in the world. An awesome wine with an extraordinary nose of melted licorice, spring flowers, black cherries, and black currants, the wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, thunderous impact but never, ever becomes heavy or ponderous. It is an ethereal, super-concentrated wine of great elegance, precision, and freshness, but with unbelievable concentration and length.
      • James Suckling: This teeters on overripe, with extremely lush plum sauce, crushed fig and macerated cherry fruit, but the silky tannins and notes of incense and graphite provide the definition this needs, while the latent depth plays out on the very lengthy finish. Hints of black tea, shiso leaf and melted black licorice chime in at the very end, boding well for future development.

      Producer Information

Domaine la Barroche is a family-owned wine producer based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine was founded in 1703 by Alexandre Barrot and today cultivates the classic southern Rhône grape varieties Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as Cinsault, Clairette Blanche and Vaccarèse. The domaine's Grenache vines date back to the first part of the 19th Century, with older grape varieties such as Terret Noir and Clairette Rose also planted in the vineyard. In total, Domaine la Barroche encompasses 15 hectares (36 acres) of vines planted across the northern and northeastern sections of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are cultivated on a variety of vineyard plots including Les Terres Blanches, Les Cabrières and Grand Pierre. In these plots, sandy topsoils and large pebbles (the iconic rolled pebbles, or "galets roulés") lie on deeper layers of limestone, with other plots occupying soils of red clay and red sandstone. The flagship Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is a blend of predominantly Grenache, hand-harvested from 100-year-old vines, as well as smaller quantities of Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsaut. Each variety is vinified and aged separately: Grenache in old oak casks, Mourvèdre and Syrah in contact with their lees in barrel and Cinsaut in stainless steel tanks. This aging period takes approximately 18 months and the wine undergoes no filtration before being bottled. The domaine's second label, Pure, is made from a single plot of 100-year-old vines and is so-named for its specific terroir and dominant grape variety (97 percent Grenache). The white version, Pure Blanc, is 100 percent Clairette, aged in large-format demi-muid barrels of around 500 liters. Domaine la Barroche also makes Fiancée, a 50:50 blend of Grenache and Syrah grapes aged for approximately 18 months in a combination of Burgundy barrels and concrete vats. The Liberty cuvée is a southern Rhône red blend, incorporating fruit from the surrounding area and built around grapes grown in the Gadagne subregion of the Côtes du Rhône Villages and released under the Vin de France title.
