        Producer Information

Château Desmirail is a Bordeaux producer on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, known for its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends. It is based in the Margaux appellation and was designated a Third Growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc and Graves. The property was founded by and named for Jean Desmirail who established the estate towards the end of the 17th Century. Several years before the 1855 classification, Desmirail was bought by Théophile Sipière, then the manager at Château Margaux. Sipière is attributed with elevating Desmirail to its third growth status, while Margaux was named a first growth. The modern Desmirail property is owned by Denis Lurton of the Lurton family, who own a number of wine estates including Château Climens. The 30 hectare (74 acre) Desmirail vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Grapes are destemmed and fermented according to their individual parcels, and the age of the vines. After blending, the wine is aged in French oak barriques, of which at least 30 percent is new for at least 12 to 18 months, depending on the vintage. Desmirail makes a second wine called Initial de Desmirail but depending on the market in which it is sold, it can be labeled as Château Fontarney or Origine de Desmirail.
