      Detailed Description

The 2010 Batard-Montrachet bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of intensely perfumed yellow stone fruits, flowers and spices. It boasts marvelous inner sweetness and layers of expressive fruit that seem to blossom endlessly in the glass, filling out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame all the way through to the huge, viscous finish.

      Reviews:

      • Vinous: Good pale color. Brooding aromas of pineapple, mirabelle, clove, menthol and licorice. Conveys an impression of volume without weight, thanks to a near-perfect sugar/acid balance. Began rather inexpressive in the mouth but gained in complexity with air. Most impressive today on the mounting, palate-staining back end, which leaves behind notes of citrus fruit, wild herbs, menthol, wet stone and vanillin oak.
      • Burghound: A pretty and ultra-fresh if still quite reserved mix of white and yellow orchard fruit, dried rose petal and discreet spice nuances is trimmed in just a whiff of oak. The large-scaled, dense and powerful middle weight plus flavors possess excellent intensity before concluding in an explosively long, lemony and stunningly persistent finish. What this doesn't have, at least not at present, is superior complexity though to be fair, this is clearly still on the way up and more depth will almost certainly develop and this is especially so given the large format bottling. I should note that even though this is still very young, it could be approached now with pleasure but given the apparent upside development potential, I would be inclined to allow this to continue to slumber. Further, my suggested drinking window of '2022+' may be slightly optimistic in magnum format but it should at a minimum be a good place to next check in.

      Producer Information

Maison Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is a Burgundy producer based in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune subregion. It is known for its fine Chardonnay wines, and has most of its vineyard holdings in Saint-Aubin. The estate was established in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Pierre-Yves Colin and Catherine Morey, both children of esteemed Burgundy winemakers. Colin had been winemaker at his family's winery since 1995 and in 2001 started a négociant business with his wife. In 2005, he left the family estate to establish his own label with his six-hectare (15-acre) share – the rest of the Colin vineyards remained with his three siblings (Caroline, Joseph and Damien, who run Domaine Marc Colin). Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has holdings in several premier cru sites in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet including Chatèniere, Champlots, Remilly, Chenevottes and Caillerets. On top of this, the domaine buys grapes to make wines from several grand cru vineyards, including Bâtard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. The estate predominantly makes Chardonnay, but also produces a small amount of Pinot Noir from Saint-Aubin and Santenay. In the cellar, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey does not employ battonage but favors lengthy lees contact and barrel aging. The wines are bottled without filtration and often without fining.
