Detailed Description
Inky ruby. Vibrant red fruit, tobacco and floral pastille aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of licorice and dark chocolate. Sweet, expansive and lively on the palate, offering juicy redcurrant and cassis flavors and a hint of rose pastille. Shows a bright, spicy quality on the incisive finish, with supple tannins contributing structure.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is at its sweet spot for drinking, with a balance of red cherry and currant fruit with mature notes of graphite, dried meats, mushroom and cedar. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc from the Oakville, Mt. Veeder and Diamond Mountain appellations, it has a medium weight and integrated tannins, and is just beginning to open to notes of olive and earth on the finish. A challenging vintage, David Ramey aged the 2011 in barrel for 19 months rather than his usual 26.
- Vinous: The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is quite soft and accessible in this vintage, with less of its trademark richness, but impeccable overall balance. Sweet herbs, dark red cherries, mint and licorice meld together in the glass. In 2011, the Annum includes 25% Cabernet Franc, which gives the wine lovely aromatics. The 2011 finishes with terrific juiciness and resonance. This is a great showing, especially within the context of an extremely challenging vintage.
Producer Information
Ramey Wine Cellars is a Californian wine producer, located in Sonoma's Russian River Valley. Founded in 1996 by David Ramey, it produces a collection of wines sourced from multiple Californian AVAs (American Viticultural Area) with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah the primary grape varieties. David Ramey is known for his pioneering work in creating the style of Chardonnay that California is famous for today. The richer, full-bodied style is created through the use of indigenous yeasts, prolonged sur lie ageing, and the use of malolactic and new oak barrel fermentation. Unsurpringly, varietal Chardonnay features heavily in the portfolio. Grapes are sourced from notable vineyards such as Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River as well as Hyde in the Carneros of Napa Valley. Ramey also produces a collection of Cabernet Sauvignon, most notably from the Pedregal Vineyard in Oakville as well as a small amount of Syrah. These wines are well-received and met with high acclaim. Ramey achieved his graduate degree at the University of California at Davis, where his thesis on how aromas evolve in wine is still utilized in the industry to understand how a wine will age. After graduation, he worked at Pétrus in Bordeaux, where he learned winemaking techniques that he would bring back with him to the USA. For 16 years, Ramey made wine at some of California's best-known wineries, including Chalk Hill and Dominus Estate, before founding Ramey Cellars.
