      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2012 Pinot Noir is pure and fresh yet intense on the rather lean, cassis-scented bouquet with sweet strawberry aromas and tart leafy notes. Silky, refined and lush on the palate, this is a generous and elegant Pinot with very fine tannins intertwined with crystalline saline purity. The finish is intense and sweet, very long but also delicate and stimulating in its finesse and mineral tension.
      • Wine Enthusiast: This wine has a bouquet of tart cherry with a whiff of petrol. Soft in the mouth, it has flavors of slightly tangy cherry cobbler, cinnamon and nutmeg, with a balanced, persistent finish.

      Producer Information

Gantenbein Wine is situated on the outskirts of the predominantly wine-growing village of Fläsch in Graubunden, Switzerland. The winery has stood here since Martha and Daniel Gantenbein took over the running of the estate from Martha’s family in 1981. The winery began producing local wine the following year and today the vineyards are planted with five hectares (12 acres) of Pinot Noir, one hectare (2.5 acres) of Chardonnay and 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres) of Riesling. Since establishing the winery in 1982, the Gantenbeins have strived to improve their winemaking processes and in 1991, for example, began experimenting with German oak barrels. The experiment paid off and the wine was well received both nationally and internationally. The next idea was to ferment a portion of the grape harvest in barriques – a process that has now been continually implemented since 1993. Two years on from this, and in another departure from their contemporaries, the Gantenbeins decided to produce wine without filtration. The winery’s unique architecture is as a result of a collaboration between architects Valentin Bearth, Andrea Deplazes and Daniel Ladner, who came up with the design in 2008. The exterior architecture of the building is designed to represent a basket of grapes, with the brickwork arranged in such a way as to allow light to permeate through the walls, thereby creating a luminous interior space with a stable temperature. The brick walls were digitally designed and the pilot walls built in research facilities at the Technical University in Zurich (ETH). The building is split to include a shipping hall in the basement, a cuverie on ground level and a restaurant above.
