        Reviews:

        • Wine Spectator: This polished red shows power and grace. Black cherry, currant and licorice flavors are fresh and clean, backed by mineral, loamy earth and espresso notes. The firm tannins are well-integrated, and juicy acidity gives way to a floral finish. Not showy, but harmonious and long. Drink now through 2025. 4,000 cases made.

        Producer Information

Pago de los Capellanes ("Estate of the Chaplains") is a wine producer in the Ribera del Duero DOP region of Spain, owned by the Rodero Villa family. It focuses on red wines from Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. The family also makes white wine from the Godello grape in the Valdeorras region under the O Luar de Sil label. Bush vines are planted in soils of clay, sand and gravel. These strike the balance between good drainage and water retention, and also retain warmth overnight. The winery credits the soils for the velvety texture and minerality of their wines. Viticultural practices such as tillage are tailored to each vineyard plot. A selection of grapes is carried out among the vines, and harvest is carried out by hand.
Wines: The lineup begins with the Joven Roble (young oak). This comes from vineyards with an average age of 25 years in the towns of Pedrosa de duero, La Horra and Gumiel del Mercado. It spends five months in 300-liter French oak barrels.
The Crianza, aged for 12 months in oak, comes next, followed by the Reserva. The latter is sourced from the estate's oldest vineyards in Pedros de Duero, with 80-year-old vines on stony, low-fertility clay limestone soils. The wine is matured for 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels.
The range is headed by three single-plot wines. Parcelo El Nogal is a sandy, stony site at 850 meters (2800ft) on a hillside in the village of Mambrilla, a short distance from the winery. El Picón is a 1.6-hectare (4-acre) plot closer to the cellars and home to some of the estate's oldest vines. Soils are clay loam with surfcae gravel. Both wines are aged for 22 months in 225-liter medium-toast French oak barriques.
Doroteo is a more recent introduction to the range named for Doroteo Rodero, the father of current owner Paco Rodero. It comes from a plot of 90-year-old vines next to the winery on gravel-covered sandy loam soils which Doroteo personally tended for decades. The wine spends 36 months in French oak barriques, followed by 24 months in bottle before release.
