2013 | Buccella | Cuvee Katrina Eileen Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2013 Buccella Cuvee Katrina Eileen Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly concentrated, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, often described as a "cult" wine. It features intense, luxurious aromas of blackberry, cassis, tobacco, and espresso, with velvety tannins, a full-bodied profile, and a long finish.

Producer Information

Buccella is a small wine producer located in Napa Valley, California. It is known for its rich and intense wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Rhône varieties - Buccella means "mouthful" in Latin. The company's first vintage was in 2002. Landscapers Bill and Alicia Deem had visited Napa on their honeymoon and decided to go into the wine business. They set up long term contracts with grape growers all over the Napa Valley region, and began making wines at various winemaking facilities around the area. In 2006 they purchased their own winery, just south of Napa town. The distinctive packaging features a front label with only a vintage year, and a wax seal, color-coded to each wines. Buccella's motif, derived from the traditional tastevin, features on the seal.
The top wine, the Katrina Eileen - named after the owners' firstborn daughter - is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon sourced mainly from a rocky, low-yielding vineyard in the western hills of Yountville. It is aged in all-new French oak for 22 months. Volumes are very modest. Less than 200 cases are made of each of the Katrina Eileen and the Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon. The latter is whole-cluster fermented, and also aged for 22 months French oak, but with about 80 percent new barrels. Fruit is sourced from a number of small vineyards in cooler (more southerly) parts of the Napa Valley such as Oakville, Yountsville and Coombsville. A small portion of other Bordeaux varieties may be added, such as Malbec and/or Merlot. Buccella's lush Merlot (just over 400 cases) is sourced from two hilltop blocks in Carneros, and spends 18 months in 70 percent new French oak. Mixed Blacks (around 240 cases) is a blend of various varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah. Despite the name it can feature a dash of Viognier. Cabernet Sauvignon that does not make it into Katrina Eileen or Buccella goes to the sister label, Mica. That name is Latin for "morsel".
